four in the morning, and now it was nearly nine and they had seen nothing of him. It was likely the dead had claimed him as one their own. The women my brother traveled with were distraught about this chance and wanted to wait for him. They could not stop in Edgware because of the growing traffic through the place, and so they had come into this side lane. In the end, despite their desires, they were left with no option but to keep moving.

That was the story they told my brother in fragments when presently they stopped again, nearer to New Barnet. He promised to stay with them, at least until they could determine what to do, or until the missing man arrived, and professed to be an expert shot with the revolver—a weapon strange to him—in order to give them confidence.

He knew the weapon would be utterly useless against the Martians and their mighty tripods and equally useless against the dead should the rotting things show themselves in any kind of decent number. Yet, the feel of the weapon in his grasp gave him new hope. His chances were far better now than they were on his own. His bruised jaw hurt ferociously and he rubbed at it while he rode with the women. He could not bring himself to ask the ladies if they held any extra ammunition for the revolver beyond what rested in its chamber. He was sure he would not like the answer.

They made a sort of encampment by the wayside, and the pony became happy in the hedge. My brother kept a watchful eye for the dead but so far none were to be seen. He told them of his own escape out of London, and all that he knew of these Martians and their ways.

He also told them his theories on the dead plague. He believed now the plague was not a plague or infection at all. After long thought, he had deduced that he’d been wrong before and the plague was indeed linked with the coming of the Martians though he was still sure it was not something the sluggish creatures had planned. The women listened to his rant but soon grew weary of his attempts to apply science to something as nature-defying as the risen dead. The sun crept higher in the sky, and after a time their talk died out and gave place to an uneasy state of anticipation.

Several wayfarers came along the lane, and of these my brother gathered such news as he could. Every broken answer he had deepened his impression of the great disaster that had come on humanity, deepened his persuasion of the immediate necessity for prosecuting this flight. It was only a matter of time until the dead caught up with them all. There seemed to be nowhere to run from the foul things. They always followed and found you in the end. He urged the matter upon them.
